Former Director, Zoological Survey of India. E. K. JANAKI AMMAL NATIONAL AWARDEE FOR ANIMAL TAXONOMY 2018

Dr Kailash Chandra has made significant contribution in the field of Animal Taxonomy particularly the insect fauna of the country. His extensive field work for about 40 years ranging from Himalayas to Andaman and Nicobar Islands has resulted into the publication of state fauna of various states, several monographic documents and 20 revisionary taxonomic studies and description of three new genera and 99 new species to science. He has published 13 volumes on fauna of eight protected areas and seven districts of Chhattisgarh and seven protected areas. He has authored and co-authored over 81 books, 165 research papers in Scopus journals and 340 chapters in various books. Dr Chandra also contributed towards faunal inventory of all ten bio-geographic zones and various ecosystems in India.

Dr Chandra completed 21 in-house research programs, 12 externally funded projects as well as three large grant projects funded by National Mission of Himalayan Studies, MoEFCC. Dr Chandra represented ZSI in XXI Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica to study the faunal elements of Schirmacher Oasis during 2001-2002. He also represented MoEFCC, Govt. of India to the IUCN World Conservation Congress held at Hawaii (2016). He hosted the session on 'Climate Change Adaptations in Coastal Areas and presented the paper on 'Coastal Biodiversity and Impact of Climate Change' during the Side Event- Indian Pavilion, during the 22nd Session of Conference of Parties (22nd COP), at Marrakech, Morocco (2016) and also participated in the side event of CoP-13 to the CBD at Cancun, Mexico (2016). He was also invited to present papers during the 1st and 5th South East Asian Lepidoptera Conservation Symposium held at Hong Kong in 2006 and 2018. He represented ZSI in '7th International Barcode of Life Conference', held at Kruger National Park, South Africa in 2017. He also participated in the 6th International Symposium on "Biodiversity and Natural Heritage of the Himalayas" at Erfurt/Thuringia, Germany (2017).

He served as an expert in various committees on Aichi Biodiversity Targets-National Biodiversity Targets, Sustainable Developmental Goals, IUCN, CITES, CMS, WLPA, PA Network, ESZ, Ramsar Sites, Wetlands, AICOPTAX, NBA-ABS Provisions, PBR, Patents, Ecosystem Services, Sustainable Fisheries, Green Skill Development Program, NMHS, NBM, NMCG, EIA, Pollution Control, Disaster Risk Reduction, Pesticides and Insecticides.
